What is Homeopathy?

Homeopathy is a natural form of medicine that has been used widely for over 200 years. In fact, it is the second largest form of medicine in the world, (World Health Organisation) and is used by 200 million people worldwide. There are over 6,000 remedies made from different substances such as plants and minerals.

Healing with homeopathy is a gentle, gradual process where the remedies stimulate the body’s natural system of healing. Symptoms are just the body’s way of letting us know that things are out of balance and we all express this imbalance differently, which is why we treat the whole person, not just the disease.

We are all subjected daily to numerous stresses and toxins in the environment and in our foods etc. This means that we can become sluggish and our bodies can become confused or need to work harder to stay in balance. The homeopathic remedies serve as a gentle reminder to the body of what it needs to do, stimulating a gentle healing response and helping the body to regain balance.

Taking into account a person’s unique response to illness, a remedy that matches their symptoms on a physical, emotional and mental level is prescribed. This helps to strengthen the immune system and encourages a gentle return to health.

Homeopathic remedies are made from a small amount of material, such as plants and minerals, which are then put through a series of dilution and succussion until there is no crude substance left in them. This is when the healing energy of the remedy is released.

How does it work?

One of the main principles of homeopathy is “like cures like”. This means that when a person is ill and producing certain symptoms, a substance that in its crude form can produce similar symptoms in a healthy person, can be given in homeopathic form to relieve those symptoms in a sick person.

For example, drinking too much coffee can cause sleeplessness, headache, fast heartbeat and agitation. When coffee is made into a homeopathic medicine, it can be used to treat people with these same symptoms to great effect.

One major difference with homeopathic medicines is that they are used in minimum doses which make them non-toxic, natural and non-addictive. They are safe for babies, adults, pregnant women, breast feeding women, and the elderly.

The aim of homeopathy is to find the root cause of the dis-ease and gently restore the client back to health, rather than simply masking the symptoms.
